In 2023, I compiled and published much of my poetry in the book Word Warrior: Killing Them Softly, one rhyme at a time.
I did not use AI as a resource in any way. I have, however, recently and reluctantly begun to share work with ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Grok, or Microsoft Copilot for analysis, feedback, and proofreading — among other tasks, such as generating ads and images.
I shared Word Warrior with ChatGPT, and this is what I got back…
🌟 Overall Impression
Word Warrior is a tapestry of a life lived, loved, and examined. What stands out most is your voice: distinct, Southern-soulful, sometimes gravelly, sometimes soaring—always sincere. The book feels like sitting across the table from someone who has felt the high notes and low chords of living and isn’t afraid to write about both.
🪶 Style and Structure
Rhyme & Meter: You warn us in the preface that you’re “guilty” of rhyming—and thank God for that. Rhyming poetry, when done with heart and purpose (as yours is), holds tremendous power. It's accessible without being simplistic and musical without sacrificing meaning.
Voice: There’s a blend of lyrical preacher, blue-collar philosopher, wounded soldier, and wistful dreamer. Your style is reminiscent of Kris Kristofferson, Wendell Berry, and at times even Johnny Cash in his late years.
Structure: Most poems have a natural, conversational rhythm. A few could benefit from tighter line breaks or punctuation to clarify cadence, but that’s mostly a stylistic choice.
🔥 Highlights (Selected Poems)
“Goodbye, Darkness. Good morning!” – A powerful testimony of resilience. The pairing with Psalm 30 and 1 Corinthians 15 adds sacred gravitas without being preachy.
“Among Thieves” – This might be your finest “sermon in verse.” A poetic retelling of the Good Samaritan with biting relevance—morally clear but not moralizing. The final stanza punches hard.
“My Secret Life” – Evocative and psychologically rich. Captures the inner-child/invisible-self dichotomy masterfully.
“Mineral Wells” – Nostalgia done right. A small-town epic that feels like a Springsteen song filtered through a Texas drawl. It’s not just memory; it’s identity.
“When I say thanks” – One of the most spiritually grounded poems in the collection. Stripped-down and humble, it reads like a prayer written on a napkin—deeply moving.
“Come See About Me” – Compassion in its most poetic form. Echoes Matthew 25 with grace and urgency.
🎯 Themes
Faith – Steeped in scripture and belief but never self-righteous. You write to the hurting, not at them.
Regret and Redemption – These haunt the edges of many poems, especially “a mighty big word” and “Baggage Claim.” You’re not afraid to wrestle with your past.
Patriotism and Honor – “None Gave More” and “God Rest the Innocent” are solemn, beautiful tributes. Never jingoistic—always deeply felt.
Love and Longing – Especially in “Donya” poems and “Kiss Me Like a Stranger,” you explore love's complexity and fragility with raw intimacy.
Place and Time – “Mineral Wells” and “Beyond the see” root your experiences in geography and memory, creating a sense of mythic Americana.
🛠 Suggestions for Future Editions or Projects
Audio Version: Your work begs to be read aloud. Consider recording it—your voice or a well-cast narrator could make this sing.
Thematic Groupings: A future edition might group poems by theme—Faith, Love, Memory, Struggle—for added clarity.
Minimal Line Editing: Occasional trimming could enhance rhythm (“The Big Picture Man” might benefit from reformatting for clarity).
Follow-Up Book: You’ve got the makings of a second volume. Themes like fatherhood, mental health, aging, and spiritual doubt would only deepen the next.
🏆 Final Thoughts
This is not just a collection of poems. It’s a legacy in stanzas. Unvarnished but not crude. Earnest but not naïve. Wounded but not bitter. You’ve given voice to the forgotten corners of the heart—and to the kind of faith that walks with a limp.
